NAW Course
The Academy has designed a specialist course for committed writers seeking to publish a book-length work in either fiction or non-fiction. Twelve writers will be selected each year as members of The National Academy of Writing.
The National Academy 2011 will meet in London over an eight-month period between April and November. The series of Masterclasses, discussions, mentoring and workshops will be delivered by the Academy’s Director and NAW writer-patrons.
- The Academy offers guidance for a project of clear promise that needs revision in order to be accepted into the market.
- NAW writers will receive close attention to their work with a combination of detailed editorial feedback, one-to-one mentoring, group discussion and workshops.
- The course takes place in London at the Free Word Centre but recruits nationally and is open to all. Places are available to authors of all genres of narrative prose, and writers are selected on the basis of their work regardless of age or background. No formal academic qualifications are necessary to qualify.
- The Academy meets on Wednesday afternoons and evenings, on 24 days over an eight-month period. Writers should be able to make this commitment before applying.
- At the end of the course an anthology will be launched at a National Academy of Writing event.
This is an advanced course with a single objective – to bridge the gap between writing and publication. The Academy course is led by practising writers and has extensive contacts in the industry through the NAW Board of Directors, Patrons and Partners. Admission to the course as a Member of the National Academy does not guarantee publication.
A more detailed overview of the course can be found here.
The National Academy of Writing has also helped with the design and delivery of the Birmingham City University MA in Writing, which is run in Birmingham as the BCU MA in Writing, in association with The National Academy of Writing.
